A few years ago, Stranger Things burst onto the pop culture scene seemingly out of nowhere and captured the zeitgeist with a deliriously satisfying blend of campy sci fi/horror and 1980s nostalgia. Its second season… wasn’t bad, but I’d say the sophomore slump label is pretty appropriate. Now we have the Season 3 trailer, and by the look of things the magic could be back in a big time way. The season will be released in full on July 4th, and things are shaping up for Stranger Things to dominate the mid-summer holiday pop culture conversation.
Anything 1980s and July 4th-related will immediately bring to mind Adventureland, one of my all time favorite movies. If you haven’t seen it, I’d highly recommend that you check it out (“it’s so choice,” as Ferris Beuller might say). It too is jam packed with ’80s nostalgia while telling a hilarious yet grounded tale of kids in their 20s trying to figure it out while slumming it working at a third-rate amusement park outside of Pittsburgh, PA in 1987. If that’s not enough to sell you, the cast is lousy with talent: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Martin Starr, and Margarita Levieva (as the immortal Lisa P.), just for starters.
